The Wormery

September 2024 brought with it some exciting new additions to the Scoil Mhuire community... the little wrigglers in our new wormery!

Over the past few months a number of classes have had the opportunity to visit the wormery and examine what it essentially a little compost factory staffed by worms. The worms help us to recycle food waste, turning it into nutrient-rich compost for the raised beds in our school garden. It’s a fantastic hands-on way for pupils to learn about sustainability, the role of worms in nature, and how we can all reduce waste. This project encourages responsibility and environmental awareness, while also giving our pupils a deeper connection to the natural world.

Pupils throughout the school have also stepped up to the challenge of naming our worms. Our wriggly inhabitants include Péisty, George Wormington, Darth Wormy, Wormworth, Squirm, Munchy, and Wormasaurus Rex. The trouble now will be learning to tell them apart!
